Ingredient Spotlight: Minoxidil for Hair Loss

What is Minoxidil?

Originally developed as an oral medication to treat high blood pressure, Minoxidil gained unexpected fame when patients noticed a surprising side effect: hair regrowth. Today, it is widely used as both oral medication and topical treatment for male and female pattern baldness.

How Does Minoxidil Work to Promote Hair Growth?

Minoxidil is a vasodilator which stimulates hair growth by improving blood flow to hair follicles, delivering essential oxygen and nutrients that support healthy hair [1]. It also prolongs the anagen phase - the active growth stage of the hair cycle - allowing hair to grow thicker and longer. Research suggests that Minoxidil works by opening potassium channels in follicular cells, which enhances follicle activity and regrowth [2]. Combining frequent scalp massages to promote blood flow and Minoxidil has shown to enhance its effects [3]. However, common side effects include scalp irritation, dryness, and in rare cases, unwanted facial hair growth when misapplied.

Clinical Evidence of Minoxidil

Clinical research strongly supports Minoxidil’s efficacy in treating hair loss. A 48-week study involving 393 participants using a 5% Minoxidil solution revealed significant improvements in hair regrowth compared to a placebo [4]. Females are usually advised to use the 2% Minoxidil solution, however the 5% Minoxidil is much more effective. Another study showed sustained increases in hair density over 12 months, cementing its reputation as a reliable long-term solution for hair regrowth [5].

While Minoxidil boasts extensive clinical backing, rosemary oil is gaining attention as a natural alternative. Rosemary oil is gentle on the scalp and may help stimulate hair growth, but research remains limited. Minoxidil, with its proven results and established safety profile, is the more dependable option for those seeking consistent regrowth.

Rojin’s Experience with Minoxidil

I started using Minoxidil in August 2024 after noticing thinning in my hair part, hoping it would help address my androgenic alopecia and restore my confidence. I use minoxidil daily and within three months, I noticed baby hairs filling the sparse areas! Initially, dryness and irritation were challenging, but incorporating a scalp shampoo such as the Nizoral Ketoconazole shampoo helped. If you’re someone who has noticed hair thinning and/or wants to grow their hair, Minoxidil is a great option.

My advice? Be patient and consistent as a sudden stop in using Minoxidil may do the reverse effect. Results take time, but the payoff is definitely worth the wait.
