Teigan's Experience: Can Spearmint Tea Ease PCOS Symptoms?
We’re excited to welcome Teigan to the blog today! We’re diving into something that affects millions of women around the world - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). It causes a range of symptoms from irregular periods and acne to excess hair growth (hirsutism) and mood swings. If you’ve ever struggled with PCOS, you know how overwhelming it can feel to manage these symptoms - especially when it seems like everyone has a different remedy to offer.
That’s why we’re excited to have Teigan share her personal experience with PCOS and how she found spearmint tea to be a helpful addition to her wellness routine. Keep reading to hear about her journey, the science behind spearmint tea, and her exclusive tips.
Teigan’s Experience
When we asked Teigan how she felt after being diagnosed with PCOS, she shared, “I felt lost. Not knowing what I could do to manage my symptoms, or where I could go for support, it was very challenging. I also found it hard to trust the remedies and tips I saw on social media.”
Curious about the buzz surrounding spearmint tea, Teigan decided to do some research of her own. “I saw a lot of people, particularly on TikTok, talking about the benefits of spearmint tea for improving symptoms, so I looked into it to see if it could help with the issues I was facing.”
So, What Does Clinical Research Say?
A recent 30-day study explored the potential benefits of spearmint tea for managing PCOS symptoms, particularly hirsutism and hormonal imbalances. In the trial, 42 participants drank either spearmint tea or a placebo herbal tea twice daily. Those who consumed spearmint tea showed significant reductions in free and total testosterone levels, along with increases in LH and FSH, indicating improved hormonal regulation. While participants felt a positive change in their hirsutism based on a quality-of-life questionnaire, objective clinical ratings of excess hair growth did not show significant improvement (1).
Another study found that drinking spearmint tea significantly reduced testosterone levels, as well as self-reported hirsutism (2).
These studies offer a promising outlook, suggesting that spearmint tea may help balance hormones, particularly by reducing testosterone levels. While it may not provide an immediate or drastic clinical solution, it can be an additional natural approach for those seeking alternative options to complement their treatment plan.
Final Thoughts
While spearmint tea may not be a miracle cure, it has become a small but meaningful part of Teigan’s wellness routine. It’s a reminder that managing PCOS often involves trial and error, and what works for one person might not work for another.
